Being Safe

Upon completing the first award, White, pupils:

  • are learning to accept wearing a seatbelt in the minibus and taxi.
  •  are learning to hold hands with an adult on transitions and visits.
  •  are learning to seek out a familiar adult if they need help.
  •  are working towards wearing their shoes at all times.
  •  are learning to use playground equipment safely.
  •  are learning to listen to adult instruction regarding danger.

Upon completing the second award, Red, pupils:

  • can keep their seat belt on in the minibus or taxi.
  •  can hold an adult’s hand when on transition or an educational visit.
  •  are beginning to learn about which people can help us e.g. teachers, emergency services etc.
  •  are beginning to understand and accept the word ‘no’.
  •  know what can be eaten.
  •  can wear their shoes at all time in school unless otherwise required.

Upon completing the third award, Orange, pupils:

  • are aware that electricity is dangerous.
  •  are beginning to understand the command ‘stop’.
  •  can begin to accept that they are not allowed on some web sites.
  •  are aware of boundaries and are beginning to accept these e.g. adults open doors.
  •  are aware of which objects they should or shouldn’t put in their mouth.
  •  are aware of how to use switches appropriately.

Upon completing the fourth award, Yellow, pupils:

  • can use classroom equipment safely with verbal support.
  •  can move around the classroom safely with verbal support.
  •  can use large playground equipment safely with adult supervision.
  •  can follow the swimming pool rules with verbal and visual support.
  •  know to hold an adult’s hand when walking in a potentially dangerous environment.
  •  leave their seat belt on until an adult tells me it is safe.

Upon completing the fifth award, Green, pupils:

  • can show an awareness of danger at school and in the outdoor environment.
  •  can show an awareness of rules when using class room equipment.
  •  can use large equipment safely without adult support.
  •  can show awareness of rules when using the pool.
  •  can indicate to adults when they feel happy, sad or hurt.
  •  will respond to their name when called by an adult.

Upon completing the sixth award, Blue, pupils:

  • can stay with a known adult when on educational visits.
  •  can listen to instructions when crossing the road and accept holding an adult’s hand.
  •  can follow the rules relating to the use of school equipment.
  •  are beginning to understand that the internet can be dangerous.
  •  are beginning to understand not to talk to people that they don’t know.
  •  can work with a partner in PE and on simple joint tasks.

Upon completing the seventh award, Indigo, pupils:

  • know not to talk to people they don’t know.
  •  know the green cross code—stop, look and listen.
  •  can move around the school safely.
  •  know who to go to if they are hurt worried or feel unsafe.
  •  know that some personal information should not be shared when using the computer. 
  •  know that some equipment can be dangerous.

Upon completing the eighth award, Violet, pupils:

  • understand that people may not be what they seem online.
  •  can list personal information e.g. age, gender, address.
  •  understand that personal information should not be shared on the computer. 
  •  can tell who a stranger is, and know not to talk to them or accept anything from them.
  •  can identify safe or unsafe places to play.
  •  can cross the road safely with adult supervision.

Upon completing the ninth award, Bronze, pupils:

  • can identify liquids, plants or other things that are bad for you.  
  •  can identify ways to keep safe online.
  •  can identify some simple forms of bullying.
  •  can identify safe places to cross the road.
  •  can identify potential stranger danger.
  •  are aware of the dangers of electricity.

Upon completing the tenth award, Silver, pupils:

  • know what personal information is and are able to come off the computer when requested.
  •  know to stay with adults on visits and to not wander off.
  •  are aware of hazards outside of school.
  •  can sit quietly and appropriately in class. 
  •  can wear clothes appropriate for the season and will remove items or put on items of clothing when requested by an adult.
  •  know how to behave on the minibus and are a good role model for their peers.

Upon completing the eleventh award, Gold, pupils:

  • are able to apply their knowledge to stay safe online.
  •  can react appropriately to any form of bullying.
  •  know how to cross the road independently and safely.
  •  are aware of the dangers of railways.
  •  are aware of the dangers of water.
  •  know who to turn to if in danger.
