Torfield's pupils learn in a place steeped in rich and internationally significant history, a history which is core to the delivery of this subject.
At Torfield, our History curriculum is designed to provide our pupils with a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Our sequences of learning have been created to spark curiosity about historical events and the significant individuals who have shaped the world of today. Rooted in each pupil’s individual stage of development, our curriculum provides accessible, meaningful learning experiences that build knowledge, understanding, and a sense of time and chronology.
Our intent is to develop reflective, informed individuals who value the importance of history in understanding society, identity, and culture. History at Torfield supports our pupils to become more confident in thinking for themselves, understanding others, and engaging thoughtfully with the world around them.
Our curriculum encourages pupils to explore key events, people, and periods across local, national, and global contexts, enabling them to make links between their own lives and the lives of others across time and cultures.
Through rich and inclusive content, we help pupils develop historical enquiry skills—asking questions, considering different viewpoints, and thinking critically. In addition, the history curriculum has been carefully designed alongside other subjects to promote cross-curricular learning and ensure that historical knowledge can support learning in other areas of the curriculum and vice versa.
